The Buffalo Bills came up just short in the AFC Championship Game, falling to the Kansas City Chiefs 32-29 in yet another heartbreak for the franchise.
For the Bills, there is nothing else that can be done except to try and attack the offseason aggressively and improve their roster. One place in particular that could use some improvement is wide receiver.
Khalil Shakir was the leading receiver for the Bills this season with a total of 995 yards in the regular and postseason combined. No disrespect towards Shakir, but those numbers aren’t going to win the Bills the Super Bowl any time soon.
If the Bills hope to get over the hump they need to improve at wideout. Let’s look at three wide receiver options the Bills should consider this offseason to improve their Super Bowl hopes next season.
Chris Godwin
Godwin has been producing at an elite level over the last few years and is no doubt capable of being a number one wide receiver outside of Tampa Bay. Before an injury cut short his 2024 season, Godwin caught 50 passes for 576 yards and five touchdowns in seven games.
Assuming he gets back to full health, Godwin would be a major addition to an already dangerous Bills offense. Most importantly, he would take a lot of pressure off of Josh Allen so the quarterback doesn’t always have to play Superman every Sunday. There will be quite a few teams interested in signing Godwin this offseason, and Buffalo should try extra hard to work something out with him.
Tyreek Hill
Hill is a player that the Bills know well from both his time with the Chiefs as well as the yearly two divisional games against the Dolphins. Hill had a bit of a down season by his standards, reeling in 81 receptions for 959 yards and six touchdowns. After a lackluster season in Miami, he made it clear that he wanted out after the Dolphins were beaten by the Jets in Week 18.
The wide receiver has made it known that at this point in his career he wants to be on a team contending for Super Bowls. Perhaps a blockbuster trade to Buffalo would make sense for both sides. His trade value would not be nearly as high as it was in 2022, so a move out of Miami could be realistic this offseason.
Amari Cooper
The Bills acquired Cooper in a trade from the Browns at the trade deadline and his production was somewhat hit or miss. In his eight games with Buffalo he hauled in 26 catches 338 yards and two touchdowns in the regular and postseason combined.
This doesn’t seem like a lot of production, but if the Bills decide to give Cooper an extension and he gets a full offseason in Buffalo, his contributions to the offense could skyrocket in the 2025 season. At his age (31 when next season starts), Cooper wouldn’t command a contract that would massively impact the Bills cap space this offseason.
