Over the last few seasons, one of the few bright spots for the New York Jets has been the cornerback tandem of Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed, with Michael Carter holding things down as the nickel. The Garden-Reed duo could be broken up this offseason, however, with a reunion with Robert Saleh. With the combination of Saleh returning to his post as San Francisco’s defensive coordinator and Reed’s impending free agency, a get-together could be in the works.
PFF’s Mason Cameron certainly feels as though it makes sense. “Reed and the 49ers should have a mutual interest in reaching a deal to reunite the cornerback with his former defensive play caller in New York. Reed endured a noticeable drop in PFF coverage grade pre- and post-Saleh coaching with the Jets, with his 90.8 mark plummeting to 54.0 from Week 5 onward this season.”
