Brock Purdy found himself thrust into the spotlight several seasons ago but has grown into his role as the San Francisco 49ers quarterback. Purdy led the Niners to the NFC Championship Game in his first season before an appearance in Super Bowl LVIII a season ago.
The 2024 campaign did not work much in his nor the Niners’ favor with Purdy posting arguably the worst statistical output in his young career. San Francisco also suffered from a number of injuries that doomed their prospects from the start.
None of that changes the way the Niners view their leader under center and the team is looking to retain him long-term with a contract extension this offseason. New details have emerged regarding this process.
Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard has indicated that neither side wants negotiations to drag through the offseason, something the Niners have struggled with in the past. But the deal itself could be different than what some anticipate.
“I heard from a plugged-in NFL source this week that the 49ers and Purdy’s camp are, indeed, feeling like there won’t be fireworks on the way to an eventual deal,” Kawakami said. “But I’ve also heard generally that the framework might be a little different than some other recent QB deals.
“I suspect this means the 49ers could be pitching a shorter-term, lesser-guarantee deal compared to the full-commitment deals signed by Trevor Lawrence, Justin Herbert, and others over the last few years.”
That may be a good starting point but it remains unlikely that Purdy and his team will agree to those conditions. While the Niners are working with a relatively small sample size here, Purdy has shown he can lead the team to the NFL’s summit.
At the end of the day, this may trickle down to the exact number Purdy is asking for. While that is yet determined, the Niners may have to give a little ground here to avoid these talks extending into OTA’s and beyond.
