Colts Set to Welcome Star QB Prospect in High-Stakes Pre-Draft Meeting
Anthony Richardson’s future with the Indianapolis Colts has been in serious question for months now.
The team and fanbase were growing tired of the lack of progression from the former first-round pick, but tensions reached a boiling point when Richardson tapped out of a game against the Houston Texans because he was “tired.”
Head coach Shane Steichen benched him in favor of Joe Flacco, but the second-year signal caller was inserted back into the lineup after just two games.
He improved slightly after his benching, but not enough to stop the Colts from bringing in some competition in the form of Daniel Jones.
Reporting in recent days suggests that the former Giants quarterback has a real shot to win the competition, and the latest move from Indianapolis makes Richardson’s future even murkier.
NFL reporter Albert Breer reported that the Colts will be hosting Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers early next month ahead of the NFL Draft.
Once considered a top quarterback in the 2025 class, Ewers saw his reputation take a massive blow last season amidst a litany of injuries and even being benched.
There is a lot of speculation that the Texas product played so poorly because of injury, and the claim definitely has its merits.
Ewers had redshirt freshman Arch Manning, widely viewed as the top quarterback prospect in College Football, breathing down his neck the entire season which forced him to play through injury.
This was evidenced by the stretch to end the regular season when Ewers fully recovered, throwing for over 1,200 yards and 11 touchdowns to just three interceptions across the five games.
For the Colts, this is another strong indictment about the uncertainty of Richardson’s future with the team.
Because they’ve committed to a quarterback competition through training camp, it’s unlikely that they’ll move the third-year quarterback at this time.
But the Jones signing and now meeting with a polarizing prospect in the draft, proves that Indianapolis is ready to move their young leader if need be.
Richardson still possesses unrivaled talent, but he’s yet to be able to show it on the field consistently.
It feels unlikely that the Colts actually select Ewers in the draft, but this should be a wakeup call that if the former Florida quarterback continues to struggle, the team is more than willing to move on.
