“I’ve always considered myself a Cougar, and BYU has been such a significant part of my life. The decision to return wasn’t easy, but it’s something I feel is right for me at this stage in my career,” Warner said in an emotional press conference. “I’m excited to be back in Provo, to contribute to a program that gave me so much, and to be a leader for the next generation of Cougars.”
The move has raised eyebrows, given Warner’s prominence in the NFL and his ongoing role with the 49ers, who were in the thick of playoff contention. However, sources close to Warner suggest that his decision was driven by a desire to give back to BYU, as well as a desire to play under a different set of circumstances that will allow him to mentor younger players.
BYU football fans are eagerly anticipating Warner’s return to campus, and it’s unclear what the formalities of his return to the Cougars program will entail.
