As Alabama basketball shifts its focus to next season, the Transfer Portal and roster turnover are at the forefront of coach Nate Oats’ plans. With the Crimson Tide’s 2024-25 campaign ending in an Elite Eight loss to Duke, the program now looks to build on its success and take the next step toward a national championship. However, to reach that goal, Oats must ensure that some key players remain in Tuscaloosa. Here are the four most important players for Oats to retain for the 2025-26 season:
4. Aiden Sherrell
Freshman Aiden Sherrell’s development was one of the season’s bright spots. After a shaky start, Sherrell grew into a key contributor and finished the season strong. He led the team in offensive rebounding rate and showed his ability to stretch the floor, hitting 33.3% of his three-point attempts. If Sherrell returns for his sophomore year, his growth as both a shooter and defender could be pivotal for Alabama. With the addition of Noah Williamson in the Transfer Portal, Sherrell’s ability to play alongside another center could prove valuable for Alabama’s inside-out game.
3. Aden Holloway
Aden Holloway made a significant leap from his freshman year at Auburn to his sophomore season at Alabama. Holloway was a dynamic scorer, hitting 41.2% of his three-pointers and averaging over 11 points per game. His offensive efficiency was critical for the Tide, and while his defense showed room for improvement, his scoring ability and fit within Oats’ system were undeniable. If freshman guard Labaron Philon decides to leave for the NBA, Holloway will likely take on an increased role as a primary playmaker for Alabama.
2. Mo Dioubate
Mo Dioubate may not have the flashy stats, but he’s arguably the most important player for Alabama to retain. Oats has called Dioubate the embodiment of Alabama’s blue-collar basketball culture. He finished second on the team in Net Rating and led in Box Plus-Minus (BPM), showcasing his importance on both ends of the court. Dioubate’s leadership and defensive prowess make him indispensable for Alabama as they aim to build a well-rounded, elite team for next season.
1. Labaron Philon
Labaron Philon is by far the most crucial player for Alabama to keep. The freshman guard evolved into one of the team’s top defensive players, providing a spark for the Tide on both ends of the floor. While his shooting still has room for improvement, his ability to break down defenses and his work ethic on defense make him one of the most promising players in the country. Philon is currently weighing an NBA Draft decision, and if Oats can convince him to return, it would be the most significant move Alabama could make this offseason.
With these four players on the roster, Alabama would have a strong foundation to compete for a national championship in 2025-26. Retaining them will be essential as Oats continues to build a team capable of challenging for the top prize in college basketball.
