It couldn’t have been a more dramatic series between the Kentucky Wildcats and the Rebs this weekend.
Plenty of rain, extra innings, weather delays and a constant back and forth battle between the two, but Ole Miss outlasted the Wildcats winning their last two games in the series.
Kentucky took game one after the original slate was pushed to a double header for Friday. They had a walk-off single to win 5-4 in the 10th inning, before the Rebs tied the series with a 3-1 win in game two.
It was a pitcher’s duel throughout the second game of the double-header, before Campbell Smithwick came in to pinch-hit at the top of the ninth inning for Ole Miss. He wasted no time and went yard with a two-RBI homer to eventually give the Rebs the win. The two teams split the double-header to set up a massive rubber match for Saturday afternoon.
Game three was moved up again with a chance of more inclement weather on the way later in the day. Weather didn’t matter in this one with the rubber match lasting 12 innings before the Rebs were able to get out of the rain and back to Oxford.
It was another low scoring affair for both teams through nine innings before things started to get going in extras. Rebel Sophomore Brayden Randle got the inning going with a single to get on base and bring Luke Hill up to bat. Hill ended up the hero of the weekend with a two-run shot in the 12th on the first pitch to close this one out. Even with all the chaos this weekend in Lexington, Ole Miss still found a way to bounce back and get the W.
The Rebs have now won three consecutive SEC series for the first time since the 2018 season and will look to improve on that streak this upcoming weekend.
Ole Miss heads up to Memphis on Tuesday night to take on the Tigers before hosting Alcorn State on Wednesday night.
While mid-week games can be fun, all eyes will be on the weekend series against the defending National Champs, No. 1 Tennessee in Oxford. Can the Rebs make it four SEC series wins in a row?
