In an extraordinary act of generosity and community leadership, Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball head coach Mark Pope has announced a $5.3 million personal investment to convert a historic Lexington estate into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth.
The facility, which will be named The Blue House Haven, will provide transitional housing, educational support, mental health services, and job training for young people aged 14–24 who are experiencing homelessness. Pope, who has long been an advocate for youth empowerment, says the project is a way of giving back to the community that has given so much to him and his team.
“This is about more than just basketball,” Pope said during a press conference Tuesday morning. “This is about giving kids a second chance—just like sports gave me. If we can give them a place to feel safe, to dream again, then we’re doing something meaningful.”
The shelter, which is expected to open its doors in early 2026, is being developed in partnership with local nonprofits and the University of Kentucky’s College of Social Work. Renovations will include updated living spaces, learning centers, therapy rooms, and recreation facilities.
Governor Andy Beshear praised Pope’s initiative, calling it “an inspiring example of leadership, compassion, and what it means to be a true Kentuckian.”
This landmark investment marks one of the largest private donations for youth homelessness in the state’s history—and it sets a new standard for how sports figures can use their influence to drive positive change far beyond the court.
