Bradley Barcola Sets Premier League Record During 31-Minute Liverpool Debut
Bradley Barcola needed just 31 minutes to give Liverpool supporters a glimpse of what their latest major signing can bring to the team.
The French winger made his Premier League debut for Liverpool during Friday’s 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road, coming off the bench in the 64th minute. Despite having limited time on the pitch, Barcola immediately showcased the explosive pace that convinced Liverpool to spend heavily to bring him from Paris Saint-Germain.

The performance was particularly notable because Barcola had only joined Liverpool at the end of August. The 23-year-old completed his move from PSG on August 31, signing a five-year contract after Liverpool agreed an initial fee of around £106 million, with potential add-ons taking the deal to £123 million.
Liverpool had been pursuing Barcola for much of the transfer window, and his arrival represented one of the biggest statements of the club’s summer rebuild under new manager Andoni Iraola.

Barcola entered the game with Liverpool already in control after Alexander Isak had scored twice inside the opening nine minutes.

Liverpool’s official profile describes Barcola as a forward capable of operating in different attacking positions. Before joining the Reds, he spent three seasons at PSG, where he recorded 39 goals and 35 assists in 152 appearances according to Liverpool’s official figures.
Iraola Impressed by His Debut
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola was pleased with what he saw from Barcola, although he also acknowledged that the winger needs time to reach full match fitness.
Barcola had not played competitive football for several weeks before arriving at Liverpool, meaning the club has been cautious about throwing him straight into a starting role.
“I think he had good minutes,” Iraola said, while highlighting the winger’s passing ability and threat when Liverpool break forward.
The manager also suggested that Liverpool’s players will need to develop an understanding of Barcola’s movements because his speed allows him to attack spaces behind defensive lines.

Competition for Places
Despite the excitement surrounding Barcola, his path into Liverpool’s starting XI will not necessarily be straightforward.
Cody Gakpo produced an outstanding performance against Ipswich, providing the assists for both of Isak’s goals. His contribution earned praise from Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, while former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher suggested that Barcola could find it difficult to displace Gakpo if the Dutchman maintains his current form.
That competition could ultimately benefit Liverpool.
With multiple high-quality attacking options available, Iraola has the flexibility to rotate his forwards depending on the opponent and competition. Barcola’s pace, in particular, could make him extremely valuable against teams that defend with a high defensive line.
A Promising Beginning
Liverpool’s 2-0 victory was important for more than just Barcola’s debut. It was Iraola’s first Premier League win as Liverpool manager after consecutive 2-2 draws against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest. Isak’s early double finally gave Liverpool their first league victory of the campaign.
